Rex Goliath, king of under-$10 Cabernets

Northside Staff Tasters: Jason Wentworth, ed., Dana Malley, Dave Pohl, Alice Peters, Jonathan Wentworth, Alan Danielson, Mickey Ireland, Mike Yowhan and Byron Metcalf

The staff at Northside Wine & Spirits recently tasted blind through 41 California Cabernet Sauvignons, all retailing for less than $10 a bottle. The mission: to weed out the "plonk," and discover some new and exciting wines that display all the classic characteristics associated with this truly noble grape.

This was no easy task. Many of the wines tasted were out of balance due to the amount of unripe, austere, mouth-puckering tannins.

The winner of the tasting, however, saved face for this group of wines, and was deemed an excellent value by Northside's tasters. At $7.99 per 750 ml bottle, the medium-to-full-bodied, non-vintage HRM Rex Goliath Cabernet Sauvignon (Central Coast) found itself ruling the roost by tastings's end. This dry red wine, made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, displays classic black currant and blackberry fruit, a touch of vanilla, and just enough tannin to give the flavors some texture and structure.

HRM Rex Goliath is a "second" label owned and produced by the well known California winery, Hahn Estates. Interestingly, HRM stands for His Royal Majesty, and is a reference to the colorful 47 pound rooster depicted on the label.

This regal Cabernet is sure to be a royal hit when you fire up the grill and serve sizzling sirloin steaks or burgers.
