Killer Chianti classico

Northside Staff Tasters: Dave Pohl, ed., Dana Malley, Barry Manville, Kelley O’Neill and Jason Wentworth

The Chianti region of Tuscany is perhaps Italy’s best known vineyard area. The wines it produces vary greatly in style, from light, fruity, and tart to deep, rich, and complex. Based primarily on the Sangiovese grape, other grape varieties may constitute up to 25% of a wine’s final blend.

Chianti is composed of seven zones. The Classico zone, located in the hills between Florence and Siena, is the source of most of the best Chianti wine.

The staff at Northside Wine & Spirits recently conducted a blind tasting of nineteen wines from Chianti Classico.

The wines as a group were well made and above average in quality. The first place wine, however, was in a class by itself. The 2004 Riecine Chianti Classico, priced at $23.99 per bottle, was deemed to be the classiest, most elegant wine of the tasting [Sku 15594].*

Made from 100% Sangiovese, it has a lovely aroma, mixing scents of red and black fruits with just a hint of clove. In the mouth, it is richly textured, with beautifully balanced flavors and a long finish. Noted wine writer Matt Kramer states in his book Making Sense of Italian Wine (2006), "If anyone should need a demonstration of what Sangiovese can achieve, you can do no better than to put a glass of Riecine Chianti front of him. And then let the wine do the (eloquent) talking."

All Chianti lovers should try this wine! Serve it with roast chicken, light seasoned pork chops, pot roast, or a hearty bean stew.
