Remarkable Riesling from the Mosel

Northside Staff Tasters: Dave Pohl, ed., Dana Malley, Dave Marrano, Kelley O’Neill, Jason Wentworth, and Alice Peters

No white wine is as lovely, delicate, and shimmering as a German Riesling Kabinett. Kabinett is the lightest German wine style made from fully ripened grapes, and Riesling is the variety best suited for this genre, producing wines of great character and fruit quality with a relatively low alcohol level.

The staff at Northside Wine & Spirits recently conducted a blind tasting of 25 Kabinett Rieslings, all under $25.

"Delicious," "beautiful," "refreshing," and "mouth-watering" appeared frequently in staff members’ tasting notes. The best wines had lovely bouquets redolent of flowers and fruit, while the palate displayed a thrilling balance of crisp acidity and slight residual sweetness.

One of Germany’s finest producers, Selbach-Oster, was responsible for the tasting’s first-place wine. Their $20 a bottle 2004 Riesling Kabinett, from the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr (sundial) vineyard was full of appley, refreshing fruit, and had a refined, lingering finish. A hint of wet stones on the nose enhanced its appeal [Sku 4699].*

This wine hails from the steep slopes of the Mosel River Valley, arguably Germany’s premier region for fine Riesling. The back label states that it’s a selection of Terry Theise, whose name on a bottle of German wine is as close to a guarantee of quality as you can get.

Try this Riesling with light appetizers, simple fish courses, or Asian dishes that combine sweet and sour elements.
