Great dry rosé value from Spain

Northside Staff Tasters: Dave Pohl, ed., Dana Malley, Kelley O’Neill, Jason Wentworth, and Alice Peters

Many wine drinkers, even those who consider themselves vinously open-minded, never think to open a bottle of rosé. Why? Rosés are often viewed as sweet, straightforward wines best enjoyed by those who don’t really like dry wine. But not all pink wines are White Zinfandel. Dry rosés, tasty and refreshing, are made in nearly all the world’s wine regions.

The staff at Northside Wine & Spirits recently conducted a blind tasting of 45 dry rosé wines from all over the world.

One interesting aspect of the tasting was color, which ranged from pale salmon to bright cherry pink to a shade of ruby deep enough to push a few of the wines into the light red category.

The best wines of the tasting were full of red fruit aromas and flavors, had refreshing acidity, and tasted dry and balanced. The group’s favorite wine was also one of the least expensive. At only $7 per bottle, the 2005 Borsao Rosé was deemed a fabulous value [sku 8529].*

Made from 100% Garnacha (Grenache) grapes in the tiny Campo de Borja region of northeastern Spain, the wine is redolent of strawberries and other red fruits, with a juicy, mouthwatering finish. (Value hunters take note: the average price of the three Spanish rosés that finished in the tasting’s top ten was a mere $6.65!)

The Borsao Rosé is an ideal summer wine. Drunk chilled, it will make an excellent accompaniment to grilled foods, summer salads, and is the perfect match for any Mediterranean fish stew.
